Brendan's story

After Brendan* injured his knee due to a fall at home, his employer got in touch with our recovery team through our pre-claim support services.

Brendan’s injury would require surgery on a torn patella, after which he’d need to wear a knee immobilisation brace for 6-8 weeks. Brendan would also undergo conservative physical therapy with a physiotherapist as part of his rehabilitation, to improve the flexibility in his knee.  

His employer made it clear that Brendan was wanting to remain at work and stay occupied throughout the initial stages of his recovery, as being productive in his role was very important to him.  

As a project manager for an IT company, Brendan worked from home but was required to make occasional visits to client offices for meetings.  

Following his injury, Brendan was working from home in a lazy boy reclining chair with his laptop. Through our Home Adaption services, Brendan underwent an ergonomic assessment with one of our qualified occupational therapist partners in the comfort of his home.

Their recommendation was for Brendan to use an adjustable ergonomic chair as well as an ergonomic leg rest which would be used under his desk – ensuring his leg is supported while he’s sitting down. Our recovery team approved the recommendation and organised for the furniture to be delivered to and assembled at Brendan’s home.

He was also supported through the development of a graded return to work plan that included a combination of at home duties with a gradual introduction back to his workplace.  

Brendan has since been able to successfully recover from his injury and continues a sustainable and flexible work arrangement – as well as using his new ergonomic workstation.  

Because he was able to return to work quickly and efficiently, Brendan didn’t need to make a claim. He and his employer were extremely pleased with the collaborative approach and immediate support that was available.
